Eyedea - RIP

One of the Twin Cities most beloved musical talents has passed away. Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen, a longtime Rhymesayer, singer, lyricist and fixture in the indie hip-hop scene died early this morning just a month shy of his 29th birthday.

Friends of Larsen said his mother, Kathy Averill, found him this morning. "It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away," she wrote on his personal Facebook page. "At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. On behalf of Mikey's family, close friends and fans, thank you."

What the fuck? That's the first thing that I thought of when Murph Dirt told me the news. I gotta say I'm thoroughly stunned. Eyedea is the kind of artist that you hope continues making records into their 60's, the dude was just ridiculously creative.

Eyedea is also one of the first rappers that I listened to that I got to meet and have somewhat of a conversation with back at Rock the Bells 2004. The dude was hella chill, we got to see a fat fight break out in front of us and talked music. I've talked to many-a-rapper since then, but there's maybe 3-4 other dudes (Pigeon John immediately comes to mind) that were as down to Earth and legit as Eyedea. A great artist and a real nice dude, rest in peace.
